| We are the witnesses of the rapid technological development. Since the appearance of spears dating back to the Prehistoric Times, there have been developed a lot of types of weapons, including nuclear weapons. In this article we will touch upon the weapon that became a breakthrough in the weapons industry. This is the Colt Revolver. Samuel Colt decided to invent a handgun with a revolving cylinder containing a few bullets which could be fired through a single barrel when he was working as a seaman. As soon as he returned to the USA he continued to work on his invention, and in 1835 his 5-shot revolver was patented. It was a revolutionary design, because it converted a firearm into a multiple-shot device. In 1836 Colt set up his Patent Arms Manufacturing enterprise in Paterson, New Jersey. Alongside his five-shot firearms, he manufactured rifles and shotguns. J.C. Hays of the Texas Rangers bought colt revolvers for his men. The Comanches were used to fighting against men armed with single-shot guns and suffered heavy fatalities at Plum Creek (1840) and Enchanted Rock (1841). Despite this success, sales were generally slow, and in 1842 the firm was closed down. A few years later he designed a device that could detonate an underwater explosive by remote control. Later on he got involved in telegraph engineering and invented the first underwater telegraph cable. In 1847 Colt designed a six-shot Walker revolver. Shortly after that, the U.S. Government ordered 1, 000 revolvers for use in the Mexican War. Colt established a new company in Connecticut. By 1855 Colt owned the biggest private arms producing facility in the world. He manufactured a wide choice of revolvers. His Navy Colt was especially popular among gunfighters. During the American Civil War Colt's factory sold thousands of revolvers and rifles to both sides. After the inventor died, the business was run by Colt's wife and employed 1, 500 workers. Colt's most popular revolver, the Peacemaker, was made for the first time in 1873. It was made in a variety of caliber and barrel lengths. Samuel Colt and his arms played a prominent role in the history of a developing United States. So popular was the Colt revolver during the latter half of the 1800s that it was perhaps the best-known gun across the world. Even today, the name Colt suggests advanced firearms to most Americans. |
